Natural Sunscreen with Plant Based Ingredients
The use of avocados dates back to 5000 B.C. The Aztecs, Incas and Mayans spread the fruit pulp on their skin to use it in cosmetic applications. The Mayans of Guatemala used the avocado to prevent parasites and intestinal worms and to promote healthy hair growth. They obviously knew they were doing something right!
In a cosmetic use, avocado oil has many therapeutic properties such as anti-aging, detoxifying and regenerative. On the medicinal side, it has anti-bacterial qualities. When you think of the regenerative properties of avocado this is an ideal oil for anyone suffering from sunburn, eczema, dryness and rashes. We can see that there are many fabulous properties that make the use of avocado oil worthwhile.
Another important fact about avocado oil is that it has a natural SPF. Does that mean you should put on a layer of guacamole and spend a whole day in the sun? Uhmm... No! On its own, you wouldn't want to use avocado oil as a sunscreen, but when used in conjunction with other ingredients, avocado oil adds significant value to sunscreen products. Avocado oil can also treat damaged skin thanks to its PFA (polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols). Studies have shown that they can repair skin cells already damaged by UV rays.
We use avocado oil in our sunscreen and in our Zinc stick. Not only do they protect the skin from the sun's harmful rays, but they work very well to soothe sunburned skin.
Why are heavy metals and chemicals so dangerous to our bodies?
To understand how sunscreens work in our bodies we need to know about the different types of toxic agents used in the sunscreens you can buy in any supermarket.
According to studies, oxybenzone has been detected in the blood of almost all human beings. Studies have shown that oxybenzone could have an impact on the endocrine system (the glands in the body that produce hormones), and increased oxybenzone levels in adolescent males led to lower testosterone levels. Octinoxate may have a similar range of concerns associated with it.
Science has shown that UV absorbers (chemical actives) cause unnecessary damage to human and aquatic systems. They are known toxins with studies that have revealed the development of cancer, endocrine and reproductive disorders and DNA mutations. For optimal effectiveness with sunscreens, zinc oxide without nanoparticles is the best option. It is an active mineral ingredient approved by the FDA and, on its own, provides safe, broad-spectrum protection against UVA/UVB rays.
In addition, there are three other toxic chemicals formulated into sun creams that have negative effects on the body:
Aluminium blocks the sweat glands to prevent you from sweating through the skin. Scientists question the safety of aluminium added to sunscreens and sunblock. Aluminium is present in many of the sunscreens we can find in the supermarket. Aluminium is a pro-oxidant and could significantly increase the potential for oxidative damage to the skin. Not only does aluminium stay on the surface, it eventually makes its way into your body and bloodstream.
Parabens are used in a wide variety of personal care products to prevent the growth of microbes. They are a known hormone disruptor and have been linked to breast cancer.
Propylene glycol is a synthetic compound used in products such as anti-freeze, but is also found in many beauty products such as sunscreens, deodorants, fragrances and shampoos. It is worrying that an ingredient used in an anti-freeze, is also part of our food and especially of beauty and body health products. The regulatory agencies do not agree either. For example, in the United States the FDA recognizes propylene glycol as a safe compound in a concentration of up to 50 grams per kilogram. In contrast, in Europe, the regulation says that no more than 3 grams per kilogram should be used. A big difference. The Material Data Sheet (for cleaning up chemical spills) says that propylene glycol can cause eczema, dermatitis and allergic reactions, as well as kidney and liver problems. It also causes problems with the growth of healthy cells.
Now that you know what ingredients shouldn't be in your sunscreen, we bet you won't think twice about stopping and switching to our natural sunscreen.
How to use it?
Apply generously and evenly at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply frequently and especially after swimming, toweling or exercise. Avoid direct contact with eyes. If irritation occurs, discontinue use. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. When exposed to the sun, wear protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat. For expiration date see back of tube. Use daily as a sunscreen and moisturizer for face and body. Use well under makeup.
