Why should I use a natural deodorant or perspirant?
Most commercial deodorants and perspirants are filled with propylene glycol, chemicals and especially aluminium, a heavy metal that has been linked to many of the problems and diseases suffered by society today. Aluminium is a mainstay in deodorants because it works in deodorants by clogging our pores, thus trapping toxins and sweat inside our bodies. These toxins accumulate and get trapped in our lymph nodes. This accumulation can lead to cellular mutations and even cancer. It seems like a high price to pay just for smelling good, don't you think?

Why are heavy metals and chemicals so dangerous to our bodies?
To understand how deodorants and perspirants work, we must first know the different types of sweat and the toxic agents used.

There are two types of glands responsible for sweating: the eccrine glands and the apocrine glands.

The eccrine glands are found throughout the body. They produce sweat when the body becomes overheated to help cool the body. The type of sweat produced by the eccrine glands is a type of clear, saltwater sweat, which does not normally contribute to body odour.

The apocrine glands are found in areas with many hair follicles, such as the scalp and armpits. These glands produce a thicker, more oily sweat in times of stress. Bacteria that live and grow under the arms feed on this type of sweat, and the breakdown of proteins is what causes body odour. The armpits are closed so the bacteria are more likely to grow.

Antiperspirant is so popular because it helps to keep us from sweating. Although this may seem like a good thing, it is actually not healthy for the body. There are three toxic chemicals formulated in antiperspirants that have negative effects on the body:

The aluminium in antiperspirants blocks the eccrine and apocrine sweat glands to prevent you from sweating. Aluminium doesn't just stay on the surface, it eventually makes its way into your body and bloodstream. Although aluminium works very well at stopping sweat, it is very harmful to our health.

Parabens are used in a wide variety of personal care products to prevent the growth of microbes. They are a known hormone disruptor and have been linked to breast cancer.

Propylene glycol is a synthetic compound used in products such as anti-freeze, but is also found in many beauty products such as deodorants, fragrances and shampoos. It is worrying that an ingredient used in an anti-freeze, is also part of our food and especially of beauty and body health products. The regulatory agencies do not agree either. For example, in the United States the FDA recognizes propylene glycol as a safe compound in a concentration of up to 50 grams per kilogram. In contrast, in Europe, the regulation says that no more than 3 grams per kilogram should be used. A big difference. The Material Data Sheet (for cleaning up chemical spills) says that propylene glycol can cause eczema, dermatitis and allergic reactions, as well as kidney and liver problems. It also causes problems with the growth of healthy cells.

Now that you know how an antiperspirant works, I bet you won't think twice about stopping and switching to a natural deodorant.

How do you use it?
Apply directly to the armpits, gently and continuously.

You can use it (and it works!) anywhere else on your body that you need it. Just make sure you do a check test before using it on extra sensitive areas (like around your intimate parts) to make sure you don't have any sensitivity to essential oils.
